Le canton d'Aytré a été créé en 1985 et modifié en mars 2015, suite au découpage territorial du département de la Charente-Maritime (Source : Légifrance)[1].
La commune d'Aytré est conservé dans le canton d'Aytré.
Les deux communes Dompierre-sur-Mer et Périgny proviennent du canton de La Rochelle-8.
La commune Puilboreau est issue du canton de La Rochelle-5.
